The creator of the single-panel comic Speed Bump is Dave Coverly (born 1964). He was born and raised in Plainwell, Michigan, and earned a philosophy degree from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti. He worked for the Eastern Echo, the student newspaper at EMU. Following that, he earned a master’s in English from Indiana University.
For his efforts, the National Cartoonists Society honored him with the Greeting Card honor in 1997, a second nomination for the same honor in 1998, the Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award in 1994 and 2002, and further nominations in 2000 and 2001. In 2008, Coverly won the Reuben Award.
